Yesterday afternoon, U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski, Governor Martin O'Malley, Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett and General Keith Alexander, Director of the National Security Agency, joined the NCCoE and our colleagues for the inaugural signing of National Cybersecurity Excellence Partnerships (NCEP). Patrick Gallagher, Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, served as master of ceremonies for the event.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) today issued a Request for Information (RFI) in the Federal Register as its first step in the process to develop a Cybersecurity Framework, a set of voluntary standards and best practices to guide industry in reducing cyber risks to the networks and computers that support critical infrastructure vital to the nation's economy, security and daily life. Dr. Pat Gallagher, the director of NIST, will be at the NCCoE’s booth (#250) at RSA from 4:00 to 4:30 pm to meet people, listen to ideas and discuss NIST’s role in the February 12, 2013 Executive Order "Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity." Leadership from the NIST Computer Security Division and key NCCoE staff will join Dr. Gallagher at the booth.

Nate Lesser, the NCCoE deputy director, will be at CyberMaryland’s RSA Expo Booth (#216) from 2:30 pm to 3:00 pm to present the center’s 2013 strategy and discuss recent milestones in the Secure Exchange of Electronic Health Information Demonstration Project (HITS). Nate will describe the HITS Use Case for Mobile Devices and talk about how organizations can participate and contribute. He will also take questions.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) invites organizations to participate in a National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) effort to integrate commercially available security technologies with health information systems. The goal is to develop security demonstrations that health care providers can use to protect patient information. Read more in a press release from NIST.

Today, the NCCoE posted a Federal Register notice about the center’s Secure Exchange of Electronic Health Information Demonstration Project. This project will undertake challenges such as the variety of client devices and the range of health care data exchange standards. By addressing and resolving security concerns, the outcomes of this project will help health care providers secure the electronic transfer of health information. Yesterday, the center hosted the Trusted Geolocation in the Cloud Workshop to review methods that companies can adopt for cloud computing and similar technologies to harden their security measures.
