Ultra Electronics, 3eTI, a leading cyber-technology company, today announced a collaborative project with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE). This project will focus on anomaly detection, providing critical and detailed cybersecurity guidance for industrial control systems (ICS) in the manufacturing sector.

OSIsoft has partnered with the National Institute of Standards and Technology to develop security architectures and practical cybersecurity strategies. The company said Monday it will provide NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence access to the PI System as well as collaborate with other government and industry partners in efforts to accelerate the adoption of secure technology.

Under the signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), OSIsoft will work with the NIST National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) in finding solutions to cybersecurity market challenges. According to a statement, OSIsoft will provide NIST with the company’s data management software suite PI System and technical advice for the development of innovative cybersecurity frameworks. The partnership will enable an increase in the development and adoption of cybersecurity technologies and business cases.

The National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) has released a draft Project Description for the manufacturing sector entitled: Capabilities Assessment for Securing Manufacturing Industrial Control Systems. This document is the first of a four-part series and addresses only behavioral anomaly detection capabilities. NCCoE is seeking comment on the guidance until December 7, 2016.

In a release Monday, the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence said they were seeking comment by Dec. 7 on their draft project description: Capabilities Assessment for Securing Manufacturing Industrial Control Systems.

Industrial control systems, or ICS, are specialized IT systems — with both software and hardware elements — that run industrial processes. Because ICS controls physical plant like factory assembly lines or chemical processing, hackers can have real world effects by attacking it.
